EU EORI Number for UK Companies
A GB EORI stops working at the EU border. To clear customs anywhere in the EU, your business needs a separate EU EORI number – one number, valid in all 27 member states. We register it for you, for a flat £128.
Customs authorities issue EORI numbers free of charge — our fee is for doing it for you, correctly and fast.
- Most numbers issued in 1–5 business days
- Independent agent — not a government body
Do you need
an EU EORI number?
You need one if…
- You ship DDP – your business is the importer of record in the EU
- You store stock in the EU – Amazon FBA, a 3PL or your own warehouse
- You, or your forwarder acting in your name, lodge import or export declarations in any EU member state
- Your carrier or customs agent has asked for your “EU EORI number”
- You move goods out of the EU – returns, repairs, or relocating unsold stock
You probably don’t if…
- Your EU customer imports in their own name — they clear customs as the importer of record
- You only sell through a marketplace or carrier set-up where someone else acts as the EU importer
- You only move goods within the UK — a GB EORI from HMRC covers that, free of charge
Not sure? Just submit the application form and we’ll confirm the right service before anything is filed.
GB EORI vs EU EORI —
you may well need both
Since 1 January 2021, a GB EORI is valid only in the United Kingdom. The EU side of the very same shipment — importing into France, storing in Germany, exporting back out through Rotterdam — needs an EU EORI.
| GB EORI | EU EORI | |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | HMRC | The customs authority of one EU member state |
| Valid in | United Kingdom | All 27 EU member states |
| Cost | Free — you apply directly with HMRC | Our registration service is £128 |
| Typical wait | Usually a few working days | Most issued in 1-5 days |
| Where we come in | We don’t register GB EORIs — but we can locate one you’ve lost | We prepare, file and follow up for you |
HMRC issues GB EORI numbers free of charge, usually within a few working days, and you apply directly with HMRC. We do not register GB EORI numbers. If you already have one and can’t find it, we can locate it for you. And if you trade with the EU, you’ll need a separate EU EORI, which we do register.

One thing an EORI doesn’t do: if your business has no establishment in the EU, import declarations usually also require an indirect customs representative. Our registration service doesn’t replace one – we’d rather tell you now than let you find out at the border. Need a representative, or an EU VAT registration? We’ll point you to partners we work with.
Common questions
Is my GB EORI number valid in the EU?
No. Since 1 January 2021, GB EORI numbers work only in the United Kingdom. Any customs formality inside the EU — importing, exporting, warehousing, transit — needs an EU EORI number, issued by one member state and valid in all 27. Most UK exporters end up holding both: GB for the UK side, EU for the EU side.
Do I need an EU company or address to get an EU EORI?
No. A UK business can register as a non-established economic operator – that is exactly what we file. Bear in mind that importing into the EU usually also requires an indirect customs representative if you have no EU establishment; the EORI is necessary, but on its own it isn’t the whole import set-up.
Which country will my EU EORI come from — does it matter?
You register in the member state where you first carry out customs formalities — in practice, where your goods first clear into the EU. We recommend the right one for your route and file there. Once issued, the number works in every member state: a French-issued EORI is just as valid in Germany or Spain.
How long does it take?
Most numbers are issued in 1-5 business days once the application is complete – the exact time depends on the member state. We tell you the realistic timeline for your route before we file. Priority puts your application at the front of our queue.
Do I also need an EU VAT number?
They’re separate registrations. An EORI identifies your business to customs; VAT is about tax. Whether you need an EU VAT registration depends on how you sell — holding stock in an EU warehouse or selling DDP often triggers it. We can point you to VAT partners; the EORI comes first either way.
Can I apply for an EU EORI myself, free of charge?
Yes. Every national customs authority issues EORI numbers free of charge, and you can apply directly — though some portals and forms are in the local language only. Our £128 fee covers preparation, filing, follow-up and support until the number is issued. If you’d rather do it yourself, our step-by-step guide is £88.
What about XI EORI numbers for Northern Ireland?
XI EORI numbers cover goods movements involving Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework, and HMRC issues them — we don’t register XI numbers. For goods moving directly between Great Britain and EU member states, the number you’re missing is an EU EORI.
We had an EORI once but can't find it. Can you help?
Yes – that’s a separate service. If your business already has a GB or EU EORI and you’ve lost track of it, we’ll locate it for £128. Start from the UK EORI page and choose retrieval.
