— For US businesses
EORI Number
for US Companies
To clear customs anywhere in the EU, your business needs an EU EORI number – no European company, office or address required. One number, valid in all 27 member states. We register it for you, for a flat $178.
- Most numbers issued in 1–5 business days
- Independent agent — not a government body

Do you need an EU EORI number?
Sixty seconds, honest answer.
You need one if…
- You ship DDP – your business is the importer of record in the EU
- You store inventory in the EU – Amazon FBA, a 3PL or your own warehouse
- You, or your forwarder acting in your name, file import or export declarations in any EU member state
- Your carrier, customs broker or freight forwarder has asked for your “EORI number”
- You move goods out of the EU – returns, repairs, or relocating unsold stock
You probably don’t if…
- Your EU customer imports in their own name – they clear customs as the importer of record
- You only sell through a marketplace or carrier arrangement where someone else acts as the EU importer
- Your goods never leave North America – an EORI is an EU and UK customs requirement, with no role in US domestic or USMCA trade
Not sure? Fill the application form and we’ll confirm the right service before anything is filed.
Wondering why your carrier keeps asking before anything has shipped? Under the EU’s ICS2 pre-arrival security filing, carriers must submit importer data – including the EORI – before goods move. The request lands early because the deadline is early.

EIN vs EU EORI – two different systems
An EIN identifies your business to the IRS. EU customs has never heard of it. At the EU border, the number that identifies your business is an EORI — issued once by one member state, then valid across all 27.

Nothing about your US setup changes. You keep your EIN for the IRS and your state registrations as they are — the EORI simply sits alongside them, for the EU side of your shipments.

Which EU country will your EORI come from?
A business established outside the EU registers in the member state where it first carries out customs formalities – in practice, where your goods first clear into the EU. Tell us your route and we’ll recommend the right member state. Once issued, one EU EORI is valid across all 27 member states.

- A signed authorization letting us file on your behalf – we prepare it for signature

One thing an EORI doesn’t do: as a US business with no establishment in the EU, your import declarations will usually also require an indirect customs representative. Our registration service doesn’t replace one – we’d rather tell you now than let you find out at the border. Need a representative, or an EU VAT registration? We’ll point you to partners we work with.
— 08 / Questions
Common questions
Do US companies need an EORI number to ship to the EU?
If your business acts as the importer or exporter of record anywhere in the EU, yes — the EORI number is how EU customs identifies your company, and declarations don’t clear without one. If your EU customer imports in their own name instead, the EORI obligation is theirs. The 60-second check further up this page covers the common cases.
Is an EORI number the same as an EIN?
No. An EIN is a US federal tax ID issued by the IRS, and EU customs doesn’t use it. An EORI is issued by the customs authority of one EU member state and identifies your business in customs declarations across all 27. You’ll hold both – the EIN for the IRS, the EORI for EU borders.
Do I need a European company or address to get an EU EORI?
No. A US business can register as a non-established economic operator – that is exactly what we file. Bear in mind that importing into the EU usually also requires an indirect customs representative if you have no EU establishment; the EORI is necessary, but on its own it isn’t the whole import setup.
Which EU country will my EORI come from — does it matter?
You register in the member state where you first carry out customs formalities — in practice, where your goods first clear into the EU. We recommend the right one for you and file there. Once issued, the number works in every member state: a Dutch-issued EORI is just as valid in Germany or France.
Do I also need an EU VAT number?
They’re separate registrations. An EORI identifies your business to customs; VAT is about tax. Whether you need an EU VAT registration depends on how you sell — holding inventory in an EU warehouse or selling DDP often triggers it. We can point you to VAT partners; the EORI comes first either way.
How long does it take?
Most numbers are issued in 1–5 business days once the application is complete — the exact time depends on the member state. We tell you the realistic timeline for your route before we file. Priority puts your application at the front of our queue.
Can I apply for an EU EORI myself, free of charge?
Yes. Every national customs authority issues EORI numbers free of charge, and you can apply directly – though some portals and forms are in the local language only. Our $178 fee covers preparation, filing, follow-up and support until the number is issued. If you’d rather do it yourself, our step-by-step guide is $118.
Does an EU EORI cover the United Kingdom too?
No. The UK is no longer in the EU customs territory. Shipments into Great Britain need a GB EORI, which HMRC issues free of charge – you apply for it directly with HMRC, and we don’t register GB EORI numbers. If your business already has a GB or EU EORI from earlier trade and you’ve lost track of it, we’ll locate it for $178 – pick “Find my existing EORI” in the application form.
